GenAI4Schools – Empowering schools to explore Generative AI

GenAI4Schools is a three-year Erasmus + European project exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) in secondary education. It builds on the previous Erasmus + European projects “Artificial Intelligence for and by Teachers” (AI4T) and “Data Literacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” (AI-DL).

Presentation

Coordinated by France Éducation international, the project brings together twelve organisations from seven European countries — France, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Spain — including Ministries of Education, universities, research centres, and organisations specialising in educational innovation.
GenAI4Schools aims to support teachers and schools in the responsible, ethical and effective use of generative AI, while strengthening human-centred approaches to teaching and learning.

Background

The rapid development of generative AI is creating new opportunities for teaching and learning. These technologies offer unprecedented possibilities to support lesson preparation and personalisation, as well as the development of students’ skills.

At the same time, their introduction into education raises important questions about their relevance, teaching practices, assessment methods, the specific competencies required to use these tools effectively, and the conditions necessary for ethical and responsible use.

In this context, teachers and their schools need research and practice-based guidance, as well as appropriate resources, to better understand whether and how these technologies can be harnessed in support of education. This need is all the more pressing given that generative AI remains an emerging field, in which both scientific knowledge and practical experience continue to evolve, and where no clear consensus has yet been reached regarding the added value of these applications for learning.

Project objectives

GenAI4Schools aims to:

  • analyse current uses of generative AI in secondary education;
  • develop human–AI interaction models adapted to school contexts;
  • produce methodological and educational resources for teachers and schools to support the effective and ethical use of generative AI;
  • pilot and evaluate these resources in different European contexts;
  • disseminate the project’s findings among educational communities and policy-makers.

The project pays particular attention to the evolving role of teachers, to the learning, teaching and assessment processes, and the conditions under which generative AI could effectively support creativity, differentiated instruction, feedback and learner engagement, without compromising educational quality or human agency. It also examines interactions between teachers, students and generative AI tools in order to better understand the conditions for their meaningful and beneficial use.

A school-centred approach

GenAI4Schools views the school as a community of interdependent stakeholders working towards shared educational goals.

The resources developed through the project are primarily intended for teachers and school leadership teams, while taking into account the wider educational community. This approach seeks to promote the coherent and sustainable integration of generative AI within schools.

In line with international recommendations on the ethics of artificial intelligence, particularly those issued by UNESCO, any activities involving students will be limited to young people aged 13 and above.

Key deliverables

The project will produce a range of outputs designed to support schools:

  • Human–AI interaction models
    The project will develop models to describe and analyse different forms of collaboration between users and generative AI systems in educational contexts.
  • G enAI Playbook for Schools
    A practical guide will provide methodological frameworks, recommendations and action-oriented guidance to support schools in integrating generative AI in an effective and ethical way, when relevant. This Playbook will include a collection of practical scenarios that will illustrate different ways in which generative AI can be used in teaching and learning.

Project timeline

The project runs for 36 months and is organised into three main phases.

  1. Analysis and design (March 2026 – August 2027)
    This phase focuses on analysing existing frameworks, public policies and practices related to the use of generative AI in secondary education. It will also involve the development of human–AI interaction models and the design of the project's initial resources.
  2. Pilot implementation and evaluation (August 2027 – September 2028)
    The resources developed during the project will be tested in partner schools across the seven participating countries. This phase will support implementation activities, gather user feedback and evaluate outcomes.
  3. Dissemination and sustainability (September 2028 – February 2029)
    The resources will be refined based on lessons learned during the pilot phase before being disseminated more widely. This phase will also focus on promoting uptake and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the project's outcomes.

A European partnership

The project is coordinated by France Éducation international and brings together:

  • Ministries of Education and Associated Agencies
    • Oide Technology in Education (Oide), Ireland
    • Service for the Coordination of Pedagogical and Technological Research and Innovation (SCRIPT), Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, Luxembourg
    • National Institute for Educational Technologies and Teacher Training (INTEF), Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Spain
    • National Education Agency (NSA), Lithuania
    • Ministry of National Education (MEN), France
    • Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM), Italy
  • Universities and Research Centres
    • University of Maribor (UM), Slovenia
    • National Institute for Documentation, Innovation and Educational Research (INDIRE), Italy
    • Institute for Educational Technology of the National Research Council (CNR-ITD), Italy
    • Nantes University (Nantes U), France
  • Consultancy company
    • H2 Learning (H2), Ireland

This diversity of expertise brings together the institutional, scientific and pedagogical perspectives needed to analyse and support the use of generative AI in education.

Towards informed uses of Generative AI in education

By combining research, experimentation and European cooperation, GenAI4Schools contributes to the development of shared knowledge, resources and references to support schools in responding to the changes brought about by generative AI.

The project seeks that AI tools are used when there is a potential to strengthen teaching and learning practices while safeguarding the fundamental values of education and the central role of the teacher. It builds on the achievements of the Artificial Intelligence for and by Teachers (AI4T) project and the Data Literacy in the Age of AI for Education (AI-DL) project.
